Why isn't my abandoned checkout automation sending text messages?

For abandoned cart messages to be sent, customers must be compliant SMS subscribers for your store. This means they need to have properly opted in to receive marketing messages from your brand.

1. For Shopify One-Page Checkout:

  • Customer must enter their phone number in the optional shipping phone number field.

    or

  • Customer must check the "Text me with news and offers" box.

  • Once these conditions are met and they abandon checkout, the automation will trigger.

2. For Shopify Multi-Page Checkout:

The automation will only send messages after ALL of these steps occur:

  1. Customer adds items to their cart.

  2. Customer begins checkout process.

  3. Customer enters phone number on shipping information page.

  4. Customer explicitly opts in to SMS marketing.

  5. Customer abandons the checkout.

Important Notes:

  • Without proper SMS opt-in, abandoned checkout messages cannot be sent (this is required by law).

  • Subscribers must opt in BEFORE abandoning their cart or during the checkout.
